As drought declarations have become more prevalent in Washington State, the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) is offering $1.7 million in drought planning and preparedness grants. Authorized last year by the state legislature, the grants are intended to support communities, farmers, and tribes in developing drought preparedness plans to increase resiliency to drought and assist in securing the state’s water supply. Drought preparedness plans will cover the actions, costs, and timeframes to increase the local community’s water supply security. Water supply security will be prioritized for minority, low income, tribal, and overburdened members of the applying community. The following are examples of the types of projects included:

  • Green infrastructure,
  • Supply and demand practices,
  • Watershed management,
  • Technical assistance, and
  • Data collection.

In the initial round of preparedness grants, Ecology awarded six proposals.

  • City of Brewster – $115,500
  • Lincoln County Conservation District – $156,000
  • Okanogan Conservation District – $484,122
  • Snoqualmie Indian Tribe – $150,000
  • Wahkiakum Public Utility District – $395,000
  • Walla Walla Conservation District – $219,137
